“Welcome to Whitlock”
Genre: Pitch Black

Welcome (interjection) : 1. A word of greeting, as to ones’ arrival at a destination.

Whitlock ((noun) : 1. A subterranean fortress within the base of a mountain, housing slaves for the cruel use of Masters who have purchased them through an auction. For reference, see to the 24690 series as you will get to experience the world first-hand.

Warning: THIS IS NOT ROMANCE . If you’re not sure what Pitch Black means, proceed with caution. The depth of darkness will vary throughout the series, but rest assure these are not your typical abduction stories. The content will go BEYOND the norm. Expect the worst of ALL situations. You’ve been warned. –A. A.

On another note, each Welcome to Whitlock will be a standalone. UNLESS, you’re keeping tabs on Bram and Everleigh from 24690 and wish to follow their continuing story within these novellas. Happy reading.

4/5

Although this is a spin-off novella from the book-hangover inducing 24690, 27001 can be read as a standalone – however, you will get more enjoyment and understanding if you’ve read the main duet first (which I’d absolutely recommend anyway).

Now we have that out of the way, let me get straight in: this is A.A. Dark’s best work yet. The writing itself comes across as significantly more mature than her previous novels, lacking their clumsiness and rushed nature. This seems so much more planned, and is extraordinarily executed. Despite it being a novella, it really takes its time, exploring the psyches of the two lead characters. It deals with things of a very dark nature, and still retains its dark eroticism.

This is a wonderful opportunity to explore more of the workings of Whitlock, in one of my favourite fictional universes – and, frankly, the idea of this series of spin-off novellas is something that made my heart rush with excitement. And if the rest are anything like this, they will be, without a doubt, some of the highlights of 2017.

This novella explores mindfuckery, addiction and a blossoming co-dependency, with complex characterisation and a slowly unfolding plot which results in the sort of spectacularly impactful endings one expects from an A.A. Dark work.

If you haven’t yet been welcomed to Whitlock, you don’t know what you’re missing.
