“What about the girl? Ira was it?”
“Iris,” Kate corrected. “You know I think you’re ready. Why don’t you take on Iris? I’ll be available if you need me. And I’ll talk to Serene about transitioning you to her for a permanent place.”
Fear struck him hard, followed by anger. “You are giving me a goodbye gift in that catatonic, unbreakable girl and breaking it off with me all at once. Just take the collar off already and let me go. Let me go, Katie.”
“Excuse me?” The tiny voice spoke from inside the back door, in time to overhear everything he said.
He immediately felt horrible as he pushed Kate aside and strode towards her. He regarded Iris, taking in her cherubic beauty with shimmering blue eyes.
“May I help you?” Sal whispered.
From his voice to his demeanor, Sal poured on a lethal dose of sex appeal, and Iris couldn’t handle his over-the-top confidence thick with a sweet intimidation. Before she could say anything else, her eyes glossed up with tears. “No, I am just that catatonic unbreakable girl. Never mind me.”
Grabbing Iris’ wrist, he gridlocked her as she did an about-face. Feeling fragile and minuscule compared to him, she bravely glanced up at him with beckoning blue eyes.
“Don’t…” Kate warned.
Iris blinked at him. She caught a glimpse of his eyes, swirling pools of different shades of green enhanced by long lashes and framed with expressive brows. Breathing intense as no one had ever physically restrained her, she bit her lip.
“Let her go…now,” Kate hissed. “I am sorry, Iris. He’s been a bit rambunctious lately.”
“I have not,” Sal disputed. His eyes caressed hers with an empathy and compassion. “I’m sorry. I’ve had a very bad twenty-four hours.”
Iris sniffled as he let her go, uncertain if he had been put off by her or genuinely outraged by his own behavior. She heard the front door slam and quickly missed his presence, the protective gaze unforgettable.
Although he insulted her, maybe he had only spoken the truth. In her mind, triggers fired—pinging rampantly—igniting her senses. She breathed alive and aware.
